Velo Vogue Re-cap

The Velo Vogue fashion show was a resounding success. On Saturday Jan 17th more than 100 people packed into the store to see the event. The place was truly packed when you consider that there was also a runway in the centre of the store, a bar to serve refreshments and a D.J. with his equipment to provide background music.

Designs from Smoking Lilly, Swobo, Workshop, Victoire, Swrve, Chrome, Deadly Night Shades and Bike Leather were strutted and ridden around the catwalk. Oh, and lets not forget, there was a great collection of city bicycles - both current and vintage.

Everyone in attendance appeared to have a great time, and most people stayed after the show to discuss the fashions, the bicycles and the state of bicycle commuting in the city.

One thing that took all of us by surprise was the amount of interest in the event. We had hundreds of calls during the week from people trying to get tickets for the show. In the end, we reached capacity early, and almost 50 people asked to have their names put on the waiting list in case those who had signed up first were not able to attend.

While it was unfortunate that we couldn't get more people in, it does speak to state of the Ottawa community's interest in and acceptance of cycling culture. Our city is ripe to get more people out on the roads, and many were eager to see that cycling is extremely practical, and that wearing a suit or skirt is both possible - and fashionable - on a bike.

Look for a Velo Vogue outdoor event to come this summer.

An interview can be heard here.

Velo Vogue: A fashion show for the Urban Cyclist.
7:30 pm, Jan 17th at the new store
Jan.08.09-After much planning, Tall Tree Cycles is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Velo Vogue, a fashion show for the urban cyclist.  The aim of the event is to promote urban cycling to the masses.  The fashions worn by the models will show that one doesn’t necessarily have to wear lycra to ride to the grocery store, or even across town to work.  One can spend a stylish evening out on the town – having arrived there atop their bicycle.

We are lucky to have a number of top notch designers who will be displaying their cycling fashions: Ottawa based Workshop (http://www.workshopboutique.ca), and Victoire http://www.victoireboutique.com/), Victoria based Smoking Lilly(http://www.smokinglily.com), and Toronto based Deadly Nightshades, as well as Simple Shoes (http://www.simpleshoes.com) and Bike Leather (http://www.bikeleather.com/).  Hairstyling will be provided by Dana from Westboro-based Divine Hair and Tanning.

Chrome bags and Knickers have arrived!
Dec.19.08-The ever-popular Chrome bags and knickers are back in stock. There is a large assortment of limited edition colours so get them while you can.

We have also received cell phone holders for all of you who have been waiting.

Finally, the number of backpacks and roll-tops are limited and always sell out quickly, so if you want them, get in ASAP!

Books for the Cyclist
Dec.19.08-We just received two fantastic coffee table books for the cycling enthusiast, The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles, and The Competition Bicycle.

The books are authored by Jan Heine, the editor of Bicycle Quarterly (which we also carry). These two books contain stunning photographs, picturing many of the worlds most influential and interesting bicycles, and they describe their histories as well.

New store launch
Dec.01.08-We are finally in our new space at 255 Richmond Rd. The store is much larger with approximately 1500sq.ft. of showroom. The extra space will allow us to have much more stock on the floor, build a bigger and more efficient repair shop, and create many new concepts that have been floating around in our heads for some time. In other words, it's going to allow us to have the best damn bike shop in the city.

Stop in for an espresso, and check out some world-class riding videos on the new flat-screen.

Merino Wool In Stock
Dec.01.08-The cold fronts are blowing; the dampness is setting in. That means it's time to break out the Merino clothing. Forget those old notions of scratchy, skin-irritating wool. Merino is soft as silk, keeps you warm even when you're wet, resists stains, and allows one to wear the garment time multiple times without picking up odour. The Swobo SS Jersey and Swrve base layers are a few of our favourites.

Steelwool Sneak Peek
Dec.01.08-The '09 prototypes are in. Peruse the following page for some great shots of the new bikes, by local photographer extraordinaire Jordan Craig.

Get your name down if you want to ensure you get one of these bikes for '09, as they are made in limited numbers.

Winterising your bike

Tires: Studded mountain bike tires, which you can apply studs yourself or pre-made studded tires work well. Use lower pressure: start with 15-20 psi and experiment for yourself.

Lubrication: Bicycles don't need to be "winterized" like cars do. Try and keep your chain clean because it gums up quicker. Bicycles that are used regularly end up with more dirt and water than grease in their bearings and yearly repacking will make them last a lot longer So repack bearings in the fall with low temperature grease and call it winterizing. We test greases for winter bike use by putting them outside when it's minus 40 degrees (F) or colder. Some "low temperature " greases get a lot stiffer than others at those temperatures. We have a lubricant for cables that stays liquid at minus 40 degrees (F). This can help your bike shift better in winter. Goretex RideOn cables require no lubrication, so they work well no matter how cold they are.

Lighting: As it gets darker much sooner, in the winter its good to have a white light in front and a red light in back, both visible at 500 feet. Many people install more than one rear flasher. One popular high-power system uses dual beams, produces 35 watts and costs $300. There are many systems available between these extremes. Each system offers a particular combination of power, endurance, weight and price.

Winter trail riding requires surprisingly little light; 4-5 watts is plenty The snow reflects well and there are no other light sources so your eyes can adapt to low light. If the moon is bright or the clouds are reflecting light from the city, try turning your light off. For long trail rides try installing a lower wattage bulb to get more battery life.
